Robert and his wife Kim were at the tail end of a yearlong gradual renovation of their Mandeville home when it came time to focus their efforts on their dream kitchen.
As Robert describes, their old kitchen was functional, albeit a little dated and a little cramped. It had been redone by the previous owners after Hurricane Katrina, just a few years before the couple purchased the home.
For 10 years, Robert and Kim lived with the kitchen as-is while tending to other renovation projects – including the master bedroom suite, updates to their bathrooms, infusing an open-concept style into their living area, and a ‘man cave.’
They made the kitchen work, as Robert says, ‘just fine.’
Eventually, though, the lack of counter space and tiny prep areas made it difficult for 2 people to work in the kitchen at the same time, much less add a third, their daughter Paige.
As they embarked on their kitchen renovation, the couple had a vision, but they weren’t quite sure how to make it come to life.
They were even ready to start working with a local big box store for the remodel.
And that’s where we came in.
Helping Their Vision Come to Life
Robert and Kim happened to be browsing a local home décor boutique when the owner introduced him to Holly, a designer from our Mandeville office. When the couple’s big box store plans – and the store’s rather disappointing service – didn’t work out, they called Holly.
Holly and our VP of Sales, Nancy, came out and looked at their space. The couple described the general sense of what they were looking for in terms of look, style, cabinetry, countertops, and overall flow.
“It very much became a collaborative effort,” Robert said. “We really leaned on them for recommendations, ideas, and suggestions. And they gave great ones, particularly ones that stayed well within our budget.”
Using our SingerSight 3D Design software, Holly and Nancy were able to help the couple ‘see’ the final design before breaking ground on the remodeling phase.
A Bright Open Concept Kitchen – Big on Prep Space and Hidden Storage
For Robert and Kim, ample prep and counter space was key in their remodel along with:
- Bright white cabinetry
- Crisp quartz countertops
- Upgraded stainless steel appliances (including Kim’s favorite: a Thermador Induction Cooktop!)
- A soaring kitchen island with bar seating and a smart built-in microwave
- Handpicked modern plumbing fixtures
- Hand-blown glass light fixtures
The couple’s love for the fairly new kitchen trend of minimalist open shelving in lieu of wall cabinetry presented a storage challenge of sorts.
Open shelving along the wall meant less cabinetry, less storage for cookware and essentials, and a conundrum of how to store frequently used small kitchen appliances.
The piece de resistance?
A spacious and completely customized hidden pantry large enough to house their gourmet refrigerator, MORE counter space, MORE cabinetry, and all of their small appliances. Additional open shelving also provides ample storage for pantry staples.
“Now we wake up in the morning, go to the ‘beverage cabinet,’ – the pantry – get our coffee, and sit at the island enjoying our new space,” Robert says. “We kind of have to pinch ourselves. We couldn’t be happier with the functionality of our kitchen. It’s laid out perfectly, it flows perfectly, and we wouldn’t change a thing.”
